Richard Lee Norris given life sentence after stabbing Skegness man in his sleep
Richard Lee Norris has been sentenced to life with a minimum term of 27 years in prison for the murder of 47-year-old Marcus Tott. Norris, 54, of Hilsdon Drive, Shildon, County Durham, stabbed his victim in his sleep at a property in Skegness in December 2022.

Mr Tott was found dead by his landlord at the property in Grosvenor Road on December 2, 2022. Evidence from a two-week trial at Lincoln Crown Court heard that Richard Lee Morris armed himself with a large kitchen knife and attended Mr Tott's home in the early hours of that morning and stabbed him in the chest whilst he was asleep.

About the story

I attended the sentencing of Richard Lee Norris at Lincoln Crown Court on Monday, June 19 following a two-week trial. This high-profile case also took place in Skegness, a big area within our readership so I ensured I knew all the details of the case to report on it efficiently and accurately for the readers and those impacted by the case.
I wrote two pieces from this sentencing, one on the life sentence itself where I accurately reiterated reasons surrounding the sentence given. This included intricate details surrounding the “picking up of the knife” which was stated by the judge.
I also made sure to include mitigating factors and points raised by the defence barrister to show points from both sides.
I used my initiative to create a second piece out of the sentencing with the shorthand notes I had written down from the highly emotive and detailed statement read out by the victim’s sister.
